How VLSM works
VLSM (variable-length subnet masking) gives each LAN its own prefix. Sort the requirements from most hosts to fewest. For each, pick the smallest block where 2^h − 2 covers the hosts, and place it right after the previous one, starting at the base address.Why largest first?
A block must start on a multiple of its own size. Placing big blocks first keeps every later, smaller block aligned, so nothing overlaps and no space is lost to gaps.
